Discover the magic of the wild with The Opera Dunedin's Penguin and Wildlife Tour
Learn about the rarest penguin in the world, the hoiho (yellow-eyed penguin) and experience the best possibility to view one of these endangered birds. We will begin with an overview of the work we are doing to help save the hoiho and care for all living species at The OPERA. Guests will then be guided through our reserve which is home to numerous native plant and wildlife species including the hoiho and kororā (little penguins), fur seals, sea lions, and several species of sea and forest birds. Finally, when penguins are in our care, guests will visit our Penguin Rehabilitation Center, where they can see these rare birds up close. .

This was a brilliant couple of hours (albeit we had awful weather) - they take you to the private reserve and you can look in the nesting boxes of Little Blue Penguins and the specially built tunnels to view any Yellow-Eyed Penguins on the reserve. We were lucky enough to see 3 yellow-eyed penguins who were in their moulting stage. Be aware that numbers are dwindling and the time of year you visit is quite crucial to whether you may see any here. We also saw a few blue penguins and lots of NZ fur seals and 1 sea lion in the bay. Staff were excellent and knowledgeable. We also were luck enough to have all 5 species of penguins endemic to NZ in their recovery centre.
During the visit, we didn´t see any penguins. Not worth it.
Kia Ora Joanantonit, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review for us and for your feedback on your tour. Yellow-eyed penguins are a rare and endangered species and are very unpredictable when returning home, and as of that we can never guarantee their sightings, but we do make the most of any viewing opportunities. Even though on your tour you did't seen any penguins, we do hope you enjoyed your experience. Again, thank you very much for your visit and we do hope to see you again! Ngā mihi, Chris Head of Tours & Front of House Operations The OPERA - Otago Peninsula Eco Restoration Alliance
This is a great way to support the endangered penguins of NZ and a great experience too.
