Orana is located within 15 minutes’ drive of Christchurch Airport and is home to some of New Zealand’s and the world’s critically endangered species.
Connect with wildlife at New Zealand’s only open range zoo by hand feeding majestic giraffe; getting up close with magnificent white rhino; travelling through the Lion Reserve (costs additional), hanging out in our two large walkthrough aviaries, meeting New Zealand’s national icon, the kiwi, watching our delightful spider monkeys swinging around their island, hand feeding friendly farmyard animals or jumping aboard our safari shuttle for a guided tour of the Park.

The Park has a large children’s playground with a 50m flying fox, picnic tables are dotted throughout the Park.

Bird Nerd
We purchased our tickets online through book me, with our focus being the native birds, especially the Keas. On arrival we were informed the Kea enclose was closed due to the introduction of a young Kea being introduced. Expressing our disappointment, the team at check in, rang the keeper and confirmed the did only two keeper talks a week and one was later that morning. We were lucky with our days as it allowed us to view several exhibits before the talk in the enclosure, where the Kea had an enrichment feeding. Being the only talk was it was crowded, but the Kea where very close. At the end we asked the keeper when she was feeding the native birds and she said straight afterwards. We headed to the walk-through native bird aviary and as strangely we were the only people in it with the keeper, it spent ages as my wife had a great time photographing birds as they came to feed. If you want to see the Kea ring and check if/when talks/enrichment are on.

Both good and bad
The staff were great, super helpful and lovely. However parts of the park did not sit well with me. The tiger was in a small enclosure and was just pacing. No enrichment to be seen - now I'm not sure if this is a holding area, but either way it was very sad to see. The otters were jumping and clawing at the glass like they wanted out and also didn't seem super happy. It seemed a bit of a trend throughout the park. We did see keepers putting food out for the Gorillas and Siamangs, in a way to keep them entertained. So I'm not saying it's all bad. It was just pretty heartbreaking to see the tiger like that.

Horrific
Felt awful paying to shit this shit show. Animals look sad. Terrible dirty enclosures, half enclosures empty. Gorillas looked depressed sat in a concrete block and the poor lonely tiger pacing up and down. Will never ever go back or recommend. Needs closing down. One star for café

Run down
Really sad, barely see animals went around 1, also some animal encounters are so far you need binoculars to see them. Zoo is run down, needs a massive upgrade haven’t been back since I was in primary school, and it looks the same from 20 years ago except run down. Food was good, keepers were awesome, but the animals seem depressed, tiger feeding time was sad, literally just chucked a box of meat for them to rip open.

Schöner Tierpark
Schön angelegter Park mit interessanten Tieren und engagierte Mitarbeiter. Auch die Geschichte über die Erweiterungsstufen zeigt ein großes Engagement der Organisatoren/Conservation.
